KMTelecom’s new press box opens its doors

Since the end of the summer, KMTelecom Stadium has received a facelift. After its parking lot was paved to create more spaces and give the area around the field a more visually pleasing look, the second addition of a new press box finally opened its doors on Homecoming weekend on September 28.

The fully-finished press box will be a game-changer for K-M as it has been something that has been in the works ever since the new bleachers were installed on the north side of the stadium a couple years ago.

“The original intent when the bleachers were put in a couple years ago was to include a press box,” K-M activities director Broc Thrienen confirmed. “At that time, it didn’t make sense financially. Now, we were able to get the plans, get them drawn and get everything all set.”

Plans are one thing, but finding someone to build the structure is another thing. With that K-M searched for bidders to help make the press box a reality and came up with Bigelow Builders to help create a top-notch venue.

“The biggest thing was to get a local builder to do it,” Threinen said. “We found Jeremy Bigelow and it was super fortunate for us that he took that responsibility on and spear headed it. A lot of things he does for the community is amazing and this is just another example.”

Bigelow quickly assembled his crew including Aaron Swartz construction and Leth Electric and the frame of the structure was put up in August. The interior work and siding was completed a couple weeks ago and was fully functional for the KoMets’ game against Stewartville on September 28.

The new press box will house the home and away coaches on the ends with the clock, scoreboard, announcer and technical support in the larger middle area. The press box even has a stairway for video cameras to record tape from the roof and allows a writer or two to camp out and do their thing inside.

As for the crows’ nest on the north side of the field, it is in the process of being turned into two suites that will be available for bidding beginning next season. Thanks to the generosity of Bigelow Builders and KMTelecom, KMTelecom Stadium is quickly becoming one of the nicest stadiums in the area.
