DC veterans honored for 50 years membership in Post

Two members of  Dodge Center American Legion Wells-Peterson Post 384 were honored Monday night for 50 years continuous membership in the organization.

Ralph Marquardt and David Marquardt were both presented with certificates by Legion member David Livingston.

Ralph Marquardt served in the U.S. Army in Korea, during 1955 and until April of 1956. He said he had been drafted into the service in May of 1954.

While in Korea, he said, he worked in radio communications. Although active fighting was over by the time he arrived it was still officially a combat zone for the first six months he was there.

Upon his discharge in April of 1956, Marquardt said he returned to Dodge County where he farmed in Wasioja Township.

He was back home for a couple of years, he said, before he decided to join the Legion because many of his friends were already in the organization.

In addition to being a lifetime member of the Legion he is also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and recently was honored for 31 years of service as treasurer of the Wasioja Township Board.

Marquardt and his wife, Ardis, have two sons, Rodney and Douglas, and a daughter, Lori.

Ralph Marquardt’s cousin, David Marquardt, served during the Vietnam era.

He said he graduated from Dodge Center High School in 1961 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965. He served in Germany in 1966 and 1967 with the 24th Infantry in the Signal Corps.

His Signal Corps job involved sending and receiving messages, he said, and unlike those of his counterparts in Vietnam his messages were mostly about good news.

After his time in service he also returned to Dodge County where he farmed.

After a year or two he too joined the local Legion Post, he said.

After farming for a period of time, he said, he sold the cows and began a 20-year career at the Four Seasons Arena where his responsibilities included driving the Zamboni.

David Marquardt and his wife, Patricia, have five children, Ramona, Evonne, Sara, Todd and Jenni.
