Kennedy, Berge lead K-M to fifth place at Minnesota Christmas Tournament
With 42 teams participating in this year’s Minnesota Christmas Tournament, there was plenty of competition for the Kasson-Mantorville wrestling team, but the crème rose to the top as the KoMets earned fifth place.
In addition to the team’s fifth place finish, four Kasson-Mantorville wrestlers finished in the top five. Bennett Berge, at 170 pounds, and Patrick Kennedy, at 182 pounds, each won first place, Carlos Ruffo earned fourth placed at 152 pounds, and Kail Waynia collected fifth place at 160 pounds.
In the first round, Dominic Mann, Joey Kennedy, Keyan Langaniere, Gio Ruffo, and Henry Paulson each lost and dropped to the consolation bracket.
Meanwhile, Logan Vaughan, Tanner Paulson, Carlos Ruffo, Waynia, Berge, Patrick Kennedy, Jackson Kennedy, and Owen Bradford won to advance to the championship bracket.
After the first round, the KoMets as a team were in third place.
In the second round, Mann, Joey Kennedy, Langaniere, and Henry Paulson each lost and were done in the tournament.
Gio Ruffo and Owen Bradford won to stay alive in the consolations, while Jackson Kennedy lost and dropped to the consolations.
Vaughan, Carlos Ruffo, Waynia, Berge, and Patrick Kennedy all won to advance to the quarterfinals.
After the second round, the KoMets were in eighth place.
In the first round of day two of the tournament, Gio Ruffo and Owen Bradford won to remain in the consolations, while Vaughan lost to fall to the consolations.
Jackson Kennedy’s loss meant his run in the tournament was done.
Meanwhile, Carlos Ruffo, Waynia, Berge, and Patrick Kennedy won to advance to the semifinals.
After the third round, the KoMets were in fifth place.
In the next round, Gio Ruffo, Vaughan, Tanner Paulson, and Owen Bradford all lost and were eliminated from the tournament.
Those four losses dropped K-M to eighth place.
In the semifinals, Carlos Ruffo and Waynia lost to drop to the consolations, while Berge and Patrick Kennedy won to advance to the finals.
The two wins helped the KoMets move up to sixth place.
Carlos Ruffo lost in the third place match to settle for fourth place, Waynia won his fifth place match, and Berge and Patrick Kennedy each won in the championship round. Berge won his first Minnesota Christmas Tournament, while Patrick Kennedy is now a three-time Christmas tournament champion.
The wins by Waynia, Berge, and Patrick Kennedy lifted K-M to fifth place.
The KoMets will aim to do even better when they participate in the Cheesehead Invitational in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. The tournament starts on Friday, Jan. 3, and ends on Saturday, Jan. 4.
