No word on whether anyone will be selling chocolate covered bacon in a bacon suit at the Steele County Free Fair as Tim Moenning did several years ago as he passed out samples at the Dodge County Expo.

Moenning Meats coming to Steele County Free Fair

Moenning Meats of Dodge Center will be making their first appearance at the Steele County Free Fair next week, showing off their latest product line, “Sweet Swine, Bacon that’s pig-licious.”

As you might have guessed, that’s chocolate-covered bacon.

Raised on their family farm, the hogs are processed locally and, in the case of Sweet Swine, they have collaborated with a commercial kitchen where the bacon is then dipped in gourmet chocolate, said Cathy Moenning.

They will also be offering a variety of meat sticks including pepperjack, Bloody Mary beef, honey ham and maple beef, all made with meat from the family farm.

The family also sells their meats at several farmer’s markets in the area including Rochester.

Sweet Swine was first introduced this summer in Rochester.

There will be several other new food entries at the fair.

Staying with chocolate, Grandma’s Cookies will be on the grounds selling, what else, chocolate chip cookies.

They will be offering fresh-baked cookies which you can enjoy with milk, coffee or water. Or take cookies home and enjoy them later.

If you need to take a break from chocolate, Mango Valley will be offering mango slices..

Mud Pie Factory is not a new vendor at the fair, but this year they will be offering the Dilly Dog, a dill pickle stuffed with a hot dog, battered and deep fried.

Another new entry, fair officials said, will be poffertjes and stroopwafels. These new treats to the fair will be located inside the Four Seasons building,

There will be plenty of old favorites returning to the fair also.

Since it’s a fair, there will be numerous stands to try basically deep-fried everything including alligator, chocolate chip cookies, green beans, Ho-Hos, lemonade sundae, olives, peanut butter cups, pickles, Twinkies, Oreos, strawberries and more.

There will, of course, be burgers, brats, corn dogs, pizza, sweet corn, kettle corn  and mini donuts.

It wouldn’t be the Steele County Free Fair without several long-time favorites.

Grace’s Mexican Restaurant will be there with both stands, one offering burritos, tacos and taco salads and the second stand with the popular Cindy’s Nachos.

4-H members will again be operating their food stand near the livestock barns.

The Aurora Diner will be back for the 54th year offering home-cooking in their building near the livestock barns.

And for those who just can’t leave the fair without their salt water taffy, Isabel Burke’s Old Tyme Taffy will be offering their candy just as they have for nearly 100 years.
