Claremont Memorial ready for Veteran’s Day dedication

It was just over a year ago that the Claremont American Legion broke ground for its Veterans Memorial.

A dedication of the memorial will be held at 1 p.m. on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11. The memorial is located on Front Street in downtown Claremont.

The memorial is complete, said Mike Berg, commander of Claremont’s American Legion Post 422, with the exception of adding the names to the pavers.

The post has been raising money for the memorial since it was able to acquire the vacant lot between its building and the bank.

In the weeks before the dedication, Leon Bohlman, who along with his wife Lori has the franchise for Legacy Monuments in Owatonna, and with his son, Brandyn, who owns Hidden Creek Hardscape, also in Owatonna, were at the location putting in the pavers and getting the surrounding landscaping under way in anticipation of the dedication.

The Legion purchased the granite for the monument through his company, Bohlman said. The two granite pillars are etched with the symbols of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, Marines and Merchant Marines. The pavers encircle the U.S. flag pole that stands in the center of the monument. There are also benches at the side of the circle of pavers. Pavers also line the sidewalk from the memorial to the street.

When spring comes flowers will be planted in a circle immediately around the flagpole.

The Claremont Legion Post, officially called the Albert Dennis Connell Post 422, was named in honor of the only soldier from Claremont who was killed in action in World War I, Berg said.

Thirty-two soldiers from the area went off to the war, he said, but Connell was the only one who died as a result of hostile fire, he said.

All Claremont area residents are invited to join in the dedication ceremony.
