Straight River Days opened Thursday in Medford with the crowning of the event’s 2022 royalty.

This year, 16 girls in grades K-12 received crowns and roses during a brief ceremony held near the Veterans Memorial. They’ll appear in parades and events throughout the year–but one will have to travel a little farther than the others.

The new Miss Medford, Samantha Meyer, 18, graduated from Medford High School this spring. In just a few months, she’ll travel to Fullerton, Calif. to attend Hope International University–and will receive a Miss Medford scholarship after completing her first semester.

“I’ll be coming back pretty frequently,” she said.

Meyer was involved with the Miss Medford program as a little girl and recently moved back to the city. She signed up again, thinking it would be a great way to get re-engaged with her community. She also hopes to be a role model for younger children.

“I know when I was little, whenever I saw Miss Medford, I was like, oh my gosh, this is who I want to be. I’m really hoping that I can make that positive impact,” she said.

The 7 p.m. event also marked the end of Miss Medford 2021’s reign. During the year, Lily Roehrick was involved in many volunteer programs, National Honor Society, the Beds for Kids drive, and helped with children’s activities at the park.

Roehrick now attends Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, where she’s majoring in secondary education.

The best part of being Miss Medford, she said, has been “connecting with the younger girls, the Little Misses and Junior Misses. It's super fun to talk to them, get to know them."

“Also, being connected with the community and being recognized as somebody who cares about Medford is really special to me, because I love it here.”

Miss Medford 2022 royalty also includes:

Little Miss Medford: Emily Prondzinski, Cecilia Jones, Lily Knutson, Amelia Ward, Adele Jellum, Eliana Warner, Peyton Kolling, Sophia Ward
