What happened in Vegas is not going to stay there
Las Vegas’ slogan of “What Happens Here, Stays Here,” may hold true for most people, but a group of women from Blooming Prairie have no problem revealing their superstar surprise from a recent trip.
Kristin Romeo, Rebecca Johnson, Tammy Johnson and Stacey Johnson got the rush of a lifetime Jan. 10, when they stumbled into some producers from “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” at Caesars Palace and minutes later met Mariah Carey, a pop superstar who has sold over 200 million records worldwide.
“We were just walking into the hotel when a lady came up to us and asked if we liked Ellen (DeGeneres),” said Romeo. “We were very excited and we all got caught up in the excitement.”
Romeo said the next thing they knew, they were being escorted into a special elevator up to the 68th floor. They got out and went down a hallway to a large penthouse with bodyguards outside.
After they signed some waivers, they cameras began rolling. As the producers asked them a couple questions, a knock came to the door and in walked Mariah Carey dressed as a housekeeper.
“Mariah came in wearing a maid uniform and duster and surprised us all,” Romeo said. “It was out of this world. It’s one of those things you can’t believe happened to you,” she added.
What took place next was sheer pandemonium for the next few minutes. Just as soon as Carey came into the room, the Blooming Prairie women ran toward her and mobbed her.
Romeo said, “We all went nuts. I completely lost it. It was exciting and completely unexpected.”
Though Carey was disguised in a house cleaning uniform, Romeo said she knew right away it was her when she saw her.
“We didn’t know what to do,” Stacey said laughing. “Obviously we attacked her because we love her so much.”
Added Tammy: “The girls just ran and I sat there just numb. It was just like a princess walking in.”
At one point, Romeo fell to the floor as she was attacking Carey. “I fell to the ground because I was in shock,” Romeo said. “I don’t think you could even understand a word we were saying. There was a lot of screaming.”
Carey treated the women to a little clip of a song before she had to leave again. But before leaving, Carey explained that each of them would receive tickets to one of her shows at Caesars Palace, where she recently announced a new residency and will play 18 shows this summer.
Asked what she thought of the music superstar, Romeo said: “She’s very beautiful in person and she was very sweet to us.”
The women were not allowed to take any photographs with Carey in the penthouse, but video of the thrill was aired Jan. 15 during the Ellen show on KAAL-TV and other stations across the country. About a three minute segment was shown on Ellen of the local women being totally surprised.
Romeo said without a doubt, the thrill of meeting Carey will be forever a highlight of going to Las Vegas. It’s something that these women didn’t mind bending the rules of what happens here, stays here.
“It was a lot of fun and it will be something we’ll talk about forever,” Romeo said.
Added Tammy: “It was a dream come true, it really was.”
